A quick solution until Apple fixes this (ie allows subscribed calendars to push to iPhone):
1) Open iCal
2) Select your birthdays calendar
3) File....Export (save to desktop as Birthdays)
4) Create a new calendar and call it Birthday's (or whatever you want it won't let you use Birthdays as the subscribed calendar is titled that).
5) File....Import (move to the desktop export and import to the new created calendar)
6) Sync
Do this any time a birthday changes, etc.
